What Is Packaging Foam?

Packaging foam is the general term for cushioning and support materials used to protect products from impact, vibration and movement during shipping, handling and storage.

Short definition

Packaging foam does more than fill empty space: when correctly selected, it restrains the product and distributes transport forces across controlled support areas.

01

How does packaging foam protect a product?

During transport, a product may experience acceleration, sudden stops, vibration and drops. Foam creates a support layer between the product and carton, limiting movement and reducing the concentration of impact at vulnerable points.

  • Restrains uncontrolled movement inside the carton.
  • Separates sensitive surfaces from direct carton contact.
  • Helps spread impact across a broader support area.
  • Creates bottom, top or side support for different product shapes.
02

Principal types of packaging foam

Foam sheets and profiles

Cut to fixed thicknesses for regular products and repeatable dimensions.

Loose-fill foam

Fills carton voids and may suit lightweight, irregular products.

Moulded foam

Tooling-based inserts for high-volume, repeatable products.

Expanding foam-in-bag

Forms support around the product directly inside the carton.

03

How is the right foam selected?

Selection should consider product dimensions, inner carton dimensions, weight, fragility, surface sensitivity and required support directions. The hardest or largest quantity of foam is not automatically the safest option.

Key principle: Correct contact characteristics and placement matter more than simply increasing foam hardness.

04

Why is NCpack different?

NCpack is a machine-free foam-in-bag solution that combines a two-component polyurethane system in one pack. After mixing, it expands inside a sealed outer bag and forms support around the product, making it practical for variable products or items without original packaging.
